MELBOURNE MARKET AUTHORITY ("THE AUTHORITY") PRIVACY POLICY IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INFORMATION PRIVACY ACT, AS AMENDED
The Authority is an organisation bound by the National Privacy Principles, which are contained within the Information Privacy Act 2000, as amended. At the Authority we respect and value your privacy and we take all reasonable steps to ensure that any personal information we collect is kept securely to prevent misuse, loss, unauthorised access or change.
What do we collect?
The Authority collects and stores personal information from its customers including retailers, growers, wholesalers and other businesses that trade in or through the Melbourne Markets. We collect business information from our customers such as the name and business addresses, contact details, accreditations, certifications, produce specialisation and details of industry award and membership of industry bodies. We also collect individual information from customers, such as the name, addresses, date of birth, vehicle registration number and licence number. We cannot compel you to provide the information, however if the requested information is not provided, we will be unable to assess your suitability to trade at the Melbourne Markets, and cannot allow you access to the Melbourne Markets.
Why do we collect information?
The personal information we collect will be used for the following purposes:
assessing and processing all applications to trade at the Melbourne Markets in accordance with the Melbourne Market Authority Act 1977 and Melbourne Market Authority By-Laws 2002;
setting up the accounts, processing of accounts and providing all relevant services to customers of the Authority;
the regulation and granting of permission for trading and access at the Melbourne Markets;
enforcement of the Melbourne Market Authority By-Laws 2002; and
providing potential traders of the Melbourne Markets with details of your business and the area you specialise in.
Marketing
Personal information is also used by our marketing department. Customer details are used when distributing Authority's promotion and customer information material. This material includes new buyer kits, mystery shopping results and business correspondence. Examples of the promotional activities conducted by our market department include the Fruit and Vegetable Directory, newsletters, National Flower Centre Directory and other public promotions, competitions and publications associated with trade at the Melbourne Markets.
Melbourne Markets Credit Service (‘MMCS’)
The MMCS is a body unrelated to the Authority, which is owned and operated by certain market users;
The MMCS provides an invoicing/collection/distribution service for buyers and sellers at the Melbourne Markets;
The Authority may disclose the personal information to the MMCS to enable the MMCS to market its’ services to market users.
Disclosure of information
Please note that customer details are not released to anyone outside the Authority unless agreed to by the customer. Our marketing department does not release customer details that are included in promotional materials or publications unless the marketing department has the customers specific agreement on each occasion.
The Authority will not use or disclose your personal information for any other purpose without your consent unless we are required to do so by law.
Access to information
The personal details we collect from you may be viewed upon request, except in circumstances where the Authority is permitted by law to withhold information.
