At approximately 8.00pm, Wednesday 27 November 2013 a fire broke out in one of the tenancies at the Melbourne Wholesale Fruit, Vegetable and Flower Market in West Melbourne.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade were called to the site and brought the blaze under control.
The damage is confined to 3 tenancies within the market, one suffered from fire damage and two adjoining tenancies from smoke and water damage. The Melbourne Market Authority are working with impacted tenants to restore services.
“Our priority is ensuring the site is safe and secure, working with affected tenants and to reduce the impact on the day-to-day operations of the market” says Mark Maskiell, CEO of the Melbourne Market Authority.
The incident is not expected to have an impact on fresh produce supply in Victoria.
While the cause of the fire is still being investigated, it’s believed to have been caused from an electrical fault.
